Measuring/providing information for an accurate price

What do we need for an accurate price/to progress the quote?

If you have spoken to us already or have received a quick quote price and want to proceed, we will ask you for a sketch of the room shape or area/path/porch with accurate measurements. If we feel it is advantageous, we may choose to draw the room partially or fully to scale so please provide accurate measurements.

How incorrect measurements affect the tiling

We cannot stress enough how important measuring properly is when calculating a period floor as these tiles are so much smaller and the pattern repeat is much more important than with conventional tiles. With conventional tiles, if you are a few centimetres out, any small discrepancy will be taken care of with the percentage of assumed waste. With period floor tiles, it can throw the whole pattern off, borders misaligned and the symmetry we have anticipated may not work in practice. With these floors, we try to plan them as symmetrically as possible and to use as many premanufactured shapes as we can to reduce the amount of cutting. With accurate measurements we can plan the tiling so that this is the case.

How incorrect measurements affect the cost

With these tiles being generally smaller than conventional tiles, and with them making up a repeating tessellating pattern, the cost is directly affected by the size of the area. If the measurements are over, we will oversupply tiles. If the measurements are under, we will supply tiles for an extra "row" of pattern which cannot be used. We aim to supply you with the correct amount of tiles leaving a handful of spares left at the end.

A good example of a hallway sketch

Please be aware we do not expect a sketch to be drawn on a computer or with architect's software. We just ask for a clear drawing with all important information contained within the sketch or your email/discussion with us.

  • The main entrance is clearly labelled
  • All measurements are clear
  • The units are consistent
  • The measurements add up and complete an area
  • It is mentioned that the measurements are taken wall to wall

A bad example of a hallway sketch

  • No main entrance indicated - it is rarely possible to make the pattern symmetrical everywhere so us knowing the focal point is important
  • Measurements are unclear
  • The units are inconsistent
  • The measurements do not add up and complete an area
  • It is not mentioned that the measurements are taken wall-to-wall or skirting-to-skirting

If we receive a confusing or incorrect sketch we will always discuss it with you. We will not willingly go through with a quote if walls do not line or add up, measurements are unclear or information is missed out unless the customer insists. However, we rely on you to provide us with accurate information. If mistakes go unnoticed by you or information is not brought to our attention, this can result in issues down the line or slow down the process.

If you are confused or would like to talk to us about the information we need to provide an accurate quote, please come into our showroom or contact us via email or phone. We will be happy to expand on any points here or help you.
